Reflex Integration
(Primitive and Postural)

Rhythmic Movement Training (RMTi) is an educational program from Sweden, firmly rooted in years of scientific research about the brain and childhood development. It was first introduced to the UK in 2006 under the name of Blomberg by Moira Dempsey (an Educational Kinesiologist) and Dr Harold Blomberg (a Swedish Psychiatrist).

The method uses innate Rhythmic Movements to help integrate the Primitive and Postural Reflexes necessary to establish good connectivity in the brain and postural control. When one or more of the primitive reflexes aren’t fully integrated, we can find life difficult as our brains and body behave inefficiently.

Primitive Reflexes are the building blocks of our neural development. They initiate movement and the desire for movement in babies. With the first ones emerging in the first 5 – 8 weeks of conception.

These reflexes are a necessary and normal part of our developmental and growth processes. With each one having its’ own unique role to play. Each primitive reflex needs to emerge, develop and finish their job before it can integrate into our system – allowing for the next level of our development. They help build and enforce our neural pathways (building the connections in our brain). They teach our bodies how to respond to stimuli (sensory perception); balance (vestibular system); the correct use of effort and force (proprioception) and our bodily needs (interoception). They help us to build memory and innately learn to understand the use of speech and language, emotional intelligence, muscle control, movement and co-ordination and how to feel safe.

RMTi for Neurodiversity and Anyone Struggling With Similar Challenges (Children and Adults)

Rhythmic Movement Training is used to help integrate Primitive, Transitional and Postural Reflexes. It is used to help with Sensory Processing, Symptoms of Neurodiversity, Focus, Reasoning and Concentration, Posture and Mobility, Stress and Anxiety, as well as System Overload in people of all ages. And has been shown to be a great aid for childhood development and emotional stability.

Every child, teenager and adult is unique and at a different stages and combinations of reflex development. For those that are struggling and want help with some aspect(s) of this development please email Beckie directly for more information or to arrange an assessment for a treatment plan tailored to them.

Reflex Integration for Postural Development

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns present at birth – you may have heard of the Moro, ATNR, STNR, TLR or Spinal Galant. They help babies survive, develop movement skills, and build the brain–body connection.

Unintegrated reflexes can cause inappropriate muscle activation (e.g., stiffness, floppiness or hypermobility) and disrupt the balanced muscle tone needed for upright posture.

The ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) and STNR (Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) directly affect head, neck, and spinal control. If still active, they can pull the body out of alignment, making sitting and standing straight difficult and requires more effort.

Our core stability can be compromised – the TLR (Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex) affects how the body responds to gravity. When retained, they can cause poor core strength, leading to slouching or excessive arching.

This can result in long-term compensation which means that, over time, this can lead to spinal issues, poor endurance, and musculoskeletal pain.

Just being told how to stand or to ‘engage your core’ doesn’t necessarily mean that you are able to. Repeating the same action time and time again will only work to strengthen the proper areas if the appropriate reflexes have integrated into your system. Until then, your body will try it’s best to help by using incorrect muscles, resulting in pain and discomfort.

For adults with postural and mobility issues Beckie uses RMTi techniques for Reflex Integration, to help your body learn how to hold itself and move correctly as well as Myofascial Release, Isometric Pressure and Contraction, Trigger Points and Massage Techniques to help remove compensatory postural patterns thus enabling your body to learn the correct posture and mobility patterns.

Reflex Integration for Stress and Anxiety

Primitive Reflex Integration can also help with stress and anxiety responses. For example, the Fear Paralysis Reflex, which can dictate our sense of safety as well as muscle tension, and the Moro Reflex, which has a huge impact on our fight and flight response and the associated hormones – such as adrenaline.

For Anxiety, Trauma and Stress related treatments Beckie combines Vagal Nerve Rejuvenation with a relaxing Trigeminal Nerve face massage, Scalp Massage, RMTi Techniques, Acupressure Points, Emotional Stress Release Visualisation and Reiki (if appropriate). This treatment is especially useful for clients who prefer to stay fully clothed.

Each treatment is specific to the individual client’s need and preferences.

Most people choose Deep Tissue Massage because, they say, they want to ‘feel it’.

Deep tissue massage is commonly used to help alleviate general pain and stiffness especially in the neck, back and shoulders.

It is good for releasing pain and discomfort from long held muscle tension, neck or shoulder pain and stiffness, headaches, RSI, general aches and stiffness from pc and laptop work or the gym etc. and can help with some injuries and improve posture and mobility.

But, as well as a good old general ‘overhaul’, we often find that some sciatica and pain felt in the knees or lower back can be attributed to muscle tension coming from deeper muscles such as in the legs and glutes. Which can be helped with deep tissue massage.

During a deep tissue massage your therapist generally uses slow firm stokes with deep pressure, which may be applied using thumbs, knuckles, hands, forearms or elbows, with the aim of releasing tight bands of muscle fibres. This may involve static pressure with particular focus on softening dense areas of tissue, followed with some friction and sweeping motions to help flush toxins away and increase healing blood supply to the areas.

Pressure is firm to very firm.

Some people choose to include a bit of relaxation or a nice scalp massage in with their deep tissue massage at the end.

It is worth bearing in mind, when booking, that it takes longer to apply this level of focus on specific areas. Therefore, if you are wanting to include neck, back and legs, or shoulders, back and arms, for example you will need to book a minimum of 60 minutes.

Deep Tissue massage combining specialistic techniques such as Myofascial Release, Isometric Pressure & Trigger Points to help remove compensatory postural patterns. More effective than deep tissue alone for relieving postural issues, pain and discomfort, headaches and long-term tension.

Additional techniques can include:

Isometric pressure can be combined with isometric contraction techniques to aid the neuromuscular system.

The therapist applies resistance and the client gently contracts the muscle against that resistance. The contraction is held (usually 5–10 seconds).

After the isometric contraction, the nervous system signals the muscle to relax more deeply than before — a reflex known as post-isometric relaxation.

This re-educates the nervous system – teaching muscles to let go of chronic holding patterns. It increases proprioception (body awareness) and prevents protective guarding – the muscle learns it is safe to relax.

Trigger point massage focuses on releasing “knots” or hyper-irritable spots in muscle fibres.

These may be active (feeling a response in a different area of the body as opposed to where the direct pressure is being applied) or inactive (feeling sensation or discomfort in the immediate area where pressure is applied).

The therapist applies sustained, direct pressure- often deep and targeted – on a tender point in the muscle.

Pressure is usually held until the tissue “releases” (muscle softens, pain reduces, or referred pain eases) followed by the use gentle massage strokes around the area to encourage relaxation, improve circulation, and prevent the muscle from tightening up again.

Stimulating the circulation and lymphatic flow helps the body clear waste products and bring in fresh oxygen and nutrients.

Fascia tissue is a very thin, sticky tissue that runs throughout our body. It is a web-like connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs. When fascia becomes tight, restricted, or develops adhesions (often after injury, stress, or poor posture) it can cause pain, reduced mobility, and tension throughout the body.

Myofascial release is particularly useful for clients that have a lot of inflammation and are find hands on treatments painful. Very effective for relieving long term tension and discomfort and assisting in pain relief and mobility issues. It is regarded as especially good for aiding conditions like fibromyalgia, back & neck pain, TMJ dysfunction, plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow.

It can improve mobility & flexibility by releasing restrictions in the fascia allowing freer joint and muscle movement. It helps to break up scar tissue & adhesions and helps tissues recover after surgery, injury, or repetitive strain.
And aids muscles allowing them to soften and lengthen by addressing surrounding fascia and enhances range of motion and reduces risk of injury.

Unlike traditional massage, MFR often uses gentle, sustained pressure and stretching rather than oil and flowing strokes. It can feel subtle but has profound effects on the body over time.

Pregnancy massage is specifically tailored to mum’s to be who are in their 2nd or 3rd trimester.

Massage should not be carried out during the 1st trimester and must only be carried out by therapists that are trained and qualified in Pregnancy Massage.

During pregnancy, massages are carried out with Mum to be lying on her side and in a semi-reclined position, supported by pillows.

There are various pressure points and areas that would normally be covered during a standard massage but must be avoided during pregnancy.

The client’s position is important and care is taken to ensure that they are comfortable and covered throughout.

As well as some (usually) much needed pampering, the benefits of pregnancy or prenatal massage include relief from pain and discomfort caused by muscle tension and changes in the body, improved circulation and lymph flow, reduced swelling in legs, ankles, hands and wrists, less nerve compression and aids in keeping sciatica and pelvic girdle pain (PGP) at bay, reduced stress and anxiety by promoting oxytocin release (the feel-good hormone) and promotes better sleep.

Reiki

Usui Reiki is the original and most widely practiced form of Reiki, a Japanese energy-healing system founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century.

It is based on the idea that a universal life energy flows through all living things, and that by channelling this energy, a practitioner can help restore balance and support healing in the body, mind, and spirit.

Your Reiki practitioner channels Reiki energy either lightly touching or hovering over your body. The energy flows to where it is most needed, helping to release blockages, reduce stress, and activate the body’s natural healing response.

Sessions are gentle, non-invasive, and the recipient remains clothed.

Many people use it help increase and cleanse their energy flow, remove blockages and promote well-being physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Reiki is completely non-denominational and will flow regardless of your beliefs – providing part of you (maybe your subconscious self) wants it to and is willing to accept it.
